Every time you lose an employee, it costs you an estimated two to three times their salary in lost production. Much of the cost of filling vacancies is from lost production, because when you lose an employee you have no one to take on that person’s tasks. That is why companies are always in a rush to find the next great employee, so that they can minimize that lost production and reduce the costs to their company.

Yet the current methods of filling vacancies in Australia are not necessarily the most ideal. Most companies put ads up on job posting boards and other online advertisement companies in order to find as many applicants as possible. While this is a good idea in theory, it ends up becoming a mess in practice. Some of the potential problems include:

  • Extensive Applications

Not every company has staff dedicated to finding new employees for open positions, and even those that do find that their staff is largely overworked. Extensive applications make it nearly impossible to find a good candidate, as the best candidates are going to be drowned in sea of less qualified applicants. Similarly, receiving this many applications tends to have a “First Come, First Served” affect, but it’s not always the first applicants that are going to be your best. Receiving a lot of applications has its advantages, but those advantages are often mitigated by the time and effort necessary for your staff to review them.

  • Lack of Screening

The excess of applicants is also due to a larger problem – applicants aren’t screened to see if they are qualified. Those applications that are received are often given only a momentary glimpse, where their CVs are briefly glanced at before the employer moves on. Without extensive screening, filling vacancies in Australia with a qualified applicant becomes much more difficult.

  • Ease of Application

Finally, another potential problem is that applying to jobs online is so easy that applicants often apply without even looking at the company or the position. In a way, many of them are spamming their CV trying desperately to get a call back, and while these may be qualified employees, they are also often not. There are stories of companies that receive multiple applications from the same individual, because the individual accidentally saw multiple job postings and applied to each one without thought.

What This Means for Your Company

On a basic level, receiving a glut of applicants has its benefits. The problem is that most companies are not equipped to handle this many applications, and that makes it difficult to find the best applicant for the position.

That is why a better option is to allow a dedicated recruitment organization to handle the screening and analysis of each candidate for you. These companies have staff that are trained to pay consideration to each candidate, giving them a thorough screening and matching you only with the best applicant for the position.
