New Zealand’s Police have turned to Twitter as a recruitment marketing tool, and it’s getting noticed.

Using a Behind The Scenes approach to everyday policing, a few cops around the country regularly livetweet about their on-the-beat shifts, giving the public a glimpse into the day-to-day side of the job, with the intention of widening awareness and appeal of policing as a career.

It appears to be working, with the @BetterWorkStory account voted into the nation’s top 50 Twitter feeds to follow by NZ Herald readers last month.

As a couple of samples from the past week show, there’s a mix of “you wouldn’t believe it” stories and community awareness in the mix:

  • Fleeing burglar took off into gardens but struggled with both fitness & bike-riding ability. Clotheslined himself on a tree branch. Busted.
  • Couple having domestic issues. Enrolled them in a programme whr families get involved 2 help them face up 2 their problems.Gd results so far
  • Found a boy wandering around with a walkie talkie, a blue vest, belt with a torch & a baton. He told us he was “playing police”. He was 19.
