Tips to determine whether a candidate’s ability matches their resume

Three simple strategies will help you determine whether a candidate is truly a great fit for a role.

Have you ever hired someone who nailed their interview, only to discover they don’t quite have the requirements needed for the position or fit your company culture? It’s usually down to recruitment oversights, which a few simple changes can easily remedy.

Establish clear criteria

Be sure to establish clear criteria for the role. Feelings can get in the way when you are excited about a candidate’s resume. So safeguard against this by having a detailed list of criteria of both hard skills and personality traits that candidates must meet to be considered. It’s also a good idea to have a list of traits you are not looking for. Refer to this list when you think you have discovered a great match.

Conduct experiential interviews

During interviews, candidates are usually on their best behaviour. Modernise your approach through experiential interviews, asking candidates to demonstrate the skills and experience noted on their resume. For example, set up a scenario where customer service representative must solve a business problem, or ask a journalist to pitch an angle for a potential story.

Ask about their failures

Learn more about your candidates by asking about their failures. Their answers can be very telling. Is your candidate hesitant to share? That could be a warning sign. In a report for ERE, Chief Advisor & Strategist for Wintrip Consulting Group Scott Wintrip advises:

“Candidates who are honest, humble, and able to share openly about past failures will positively contribute to your company’s success. The failure question is a great way to identify the candidates who are willing to bring transparency to their role within your [organisation].”

Establishing clear criteria of hard and soft skills, creating experiential interviews, and asking your candidates to share their past failures will benefit your overall recruitment process. These small changes can save you valuable time and energy in hiring the right person.
